Resumo: The relationship between the Amazon and voyagers is a subject that haslong been urging researchers in different disciplines and various parts ofthe world. And this subject sometimes seems endless. This paper seeks tocontribute to this discussion with a small fragment: narrating the journeyof Franz Keller-Leuzinger. Although his work has already been used inworks dealing with the history of the railroad and the photography, thereare few studies dedicated exclusively to this character, which remainsalmost unknown. The main goal of this article is to give him prominenceand thus to understand how the Amazon was perceived at the end ofthe Empire, how its integration to the national territory was conceived andits role in the Brazilian nationalism sentiment based upon the idea of agreat territory.

Tal qual este rio, o tema, às vezes, parece inesgotável. O presentetexto procura contribuir para este enorme mosaico com mais um pequenofragmento: narrar a viagem de Franz Keller-Leuzinger. Apesar de sua obrajá ter sido utilizada em trabalhos sobre a história da ferrovia e fotografia,ainda são escassos os trabalhos dedicados exclusivamente para estepersonagem, que continua um quase desconhecido.
