Resumo: The main objective of this article is to analyze the two main economiesof Piauí, starting from the end of the eighteenth centuryand extending throughout the nineteenth century. Fromthis analysis we intend to make the reader aware that the needof the slave laborer in Piauí was closely linked to a productivesystem that was based on the exploitation of the work of thecaptive. That is, the existence of the slave laborer in Piaui’slands was linked to work, regardless of the economic growthof the region.

A partir dessa análise,pretendemos demonstrar que a necessidade do trabalhadorescravo no Piauí estava intimamente ligada a um sistema produtivoassentado na exploração do seu trabalho.
