Resumo: The article deals with the administration of communication as a constituent of the European overseas empires in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, having as a case of study the Portuguese captaincy of Rio Grande de São Pedro. It analyzes the Portuguese information policy directed to the Spanish viceroyalty of the River Plate, with particular reference to espionage. The objective is to demonstrate the existence of this phenomenon as Portugal's imperial policy for America, perceiving limits and possibilities for the definition of sovereignty and for defensive and expansionist plans.

Analiza la política de información portuguesa dirigida al virreinato español del Río de la Plata, con especial referencia al espionaje. El objetivo es demostrar la existencia de este fenómeno como la política imperial de Portugal para América, percibiendo límites y posibilidades para la definición de soberanía y para planes defensivos y expansionistas.O artigo aborda a administração da comunicação enquanto constituinte dos impérios europeus ultramarinos em final do século XVIII e início do XIX, tendo por estudo de caso a capitania portuguesa do Rio Grande de São Pedro.
