Organizations in the Anthropocene: A dialogue between organizing practices and multispecies ethnography

Resumo: This theoretical paper aims to help us think about organizations in the Anthropocene from organizing practices. We propose an ontological and epistemological shift, which means looking at the Anthropocene critically and politically to evade the dualism between humanity and nature. Therefore, to reduce the theoretical gap present in Theodore Schatzki's organizing practices, we bring non-human animals to the discussion. Furthermore, we propose that multispecies ethnography be an effective methodology to mediate the theoretical and methodological gap in the social relations of human and non-human actors, including in organizing processes and everyday life. This dialogue between the Anthropocene and organizations allows us to think that organizations “happen” beyond humans; since other organisms are also organizing and have a place in organizational processes. We consider that humanity is not part of nature, but is nature itself, as well as organizations. Thus, human-centered organizing practices present a limited understanding of our social reality.

Proponemos un cambio ontológico y epistemológico, que exige una evaluación crítica y política al Antropoceno, rompiendo con el dualismo entre humanidad y naturaleza. Por lo tanto, como una forma de reducir la brecha teórica presente en las prácticas organizativas de Theodore Schatzki, traemos a la discusión animales no humanos. Además, proponemos que la etnografía multiespecies sea una metodología eficaz para mediar la brecha teórica y metodológica en las relaciones sociales de los actores humanos y no humanos, incluso en los procesos organizativos y en la vida cotidiana. Este diálogo entre el Antropoceno y las organizaciones nos permite pensar que las organizaciones “suceden” más allá de lo humano, así como otros organismos también se organizan y tienen un lugar en los procesos organizativos. Consideramos que la humanidad no es parte de la naturaleza, sino que es la naturaleza, así como las organizaciones. Así, las prácticas organizativas centradas en el ser humano terminan presentando una comprensión limitada de nuestra realidad social.O objetivo deste artigo teórico é pensarmos como as organizações podem ser compreendias no Antropoceno a partir de práticas organizativas. Propomos um deslocamento ontológico e epistemológico, sendo necessário um olhar crítico e político a cerca do Antropoceno, rompendo com o dualismo entre humanidade e natureza. Para tanto, como forma de diminuir a lacuna teórica presente nas práticas organizativas de Theodore Schatzki, trazemos os animais não-humanos para a discussão. Além disso, propomos que a etnografia multiespécies seja uma metodologia efetiva para mediar a lacuna teórica e metodológica das relações sociais de atores humanos e não-humanos, inclusive, em processos e cotidianos organizacionais. Esse diálogo entre o Antropoceno e as organizações permite pensarmos que as organizações “acontecem” para além do humano, assim como outros organismos também se organizam e possuem lugar nos processos organizativos. Consideramos que a humanidade não faz parte da natureza, mas é natureza, assim como as próprias organizações.
