This article aims to analyze the contemporaneity and didactic use of Machado de Assis' text adapted for a play entitled “Mulheres de Machado” or “Machado’s Women” (ROSA, 2008) and its cultural manifestation as a form of artistic expression. The script was written to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Machado de Assis' death to be staged at La Salle University, in Canoas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, by students and professors of the Language and Literature Undergraduate Course. The text brings together characters from several books, set at Colombo Tea House, in Rio de Janeiro, whose female characters are introduced by the author himself and, in his conversations, one can see the scenario of the time between 1880 and 1890, their customs and ideas. Thus, the dramatic text presents suitable elements to an analysis of the culture underlying it, promoting the artistic expression of literature and drama. For an analysis, we start with the concept of culture presented by Ernst Cassirer (2012) regarding the political and social study of man and the task of linking them both. Also, this study presents a discussion of the literary text adapted to the dramatic text based on studies by Hucheon (2013). We hope this study clarifies the Brazilian and artistic culture of the literary and dramatic texts based on the writings of the renowned Brazilian writer Machado de Assis.
