Resumo: The continuity of certain topics of Baroque culture in the nineteenth-century Latin American art can also occur in the work of Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Blanes. Uruguay and Argentina historiography emphasized the importance of this author as a representative of academic painting and as a key player in building a national icon-sphere. However, little research has been done about the survival of images and ideas that come from a pre-enlightened past; nor about the links with the flagship, carrying a body of literature of ideas and images that transformed and adjusted to new genres such as history painting, they are kept alive in his work, until the late nineteenth century.

La historiografía uruguaya y argentina han destacado la importancia de este autor como representante de la pintura académica y como actor fundamental en la construcción de una icono-esfera nacional. Sin embargo, poco se ha investigado acerca de la pervivencia de imágenes e ideas que provienen de un pasado pre-ilustrado; tampoco acerca de los vínculos con la literatura emblemática, portadora de un cuerpo de ideas e imágenes que, transformadas y ajustadas a nuevos géneros como la pintura de historia, se mantienen vivas en su obra, hasta finales del siglo XIX.A continuidade de certos tópicos da cultura barroca na arte latino-americana do século XIX, também pode ocorrem na obra do artista uruguaio Juan Manuel Blanes. A historiografia do Uruguai e da Argentina destacou a importância desse autor como representante da pintura acadêmica e como protagonista na construção de uma iconosfera nacional.
