Resumo: This research seeks to present the perception of researchers and a part of the Vila Nova community, São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina, Brazil, about the distance between a Public Education, Research and Extension Institution linked to the professional and higher education - implanted in the year 2011 and the surrounding neighbors. For this, an exploratory-descriptive field research was constituted. Authors such as Milton Santos and Stuart Hall, among others, contributed to the theoretical underpinning covering concepts of space and identity. The analysis of the data made it possible to carry out a brief socio-demographic survey of the community, to understand the imaginary of this population regarding the neighboring Campus and to propose alternatives of interaction through the human, pedagogical and spatial resources that the Educational Institution could offer according to the specific demands of this group Identity.

Para tanto, constituiu-se uma pesquisa de campo exploratória-descritiva. Autores como Milton Santos e Stuart Hall, entre outros, contribuíram para o embasamento teórico com conceitos de espaço e identidade, respectivamente. A análise dos dados possibilitou realizar um breve levantamento sociodemográfico da comunidade, compreender o imaginário desta população quanto ao campus e propor alternativas de interação via os recursos humanos, pedagógicos e espaciais que o próprio estabelecimento educacional poderia oferecer conforme as demandas específicas desse grupo identitário.
