Depression and heart disease in elderly: literature review

Resumo: The phenomenon of population ageing demands specific care related to healthcare. Researches show a relationship between cardiovascular diseases and presence of depressive symptoms in this population. This study aimed to make a review of the international literature on the re­lationship between cardiovascular diseases and depression in elderly populations. The study consisted of a systematic search in Pubmed da­tabase, using as keywords the terms “cardiovascular disease”, “depres­sion” and “elderly”. We chose as the parameter range of 2008 to 2013, and after reading and sorting, we selected 23 articles for analysis. The results show an interaction among biological, social and psychological aspects, indicating that the relationship between depression and heart disease is bi-directional and complex, and may have negative results in health and quality of life of the elderly, demanding attention and early intervention.

As pesquisas evidenciam uma rela­ção entre doenças cardiovasculares e presença de sintomas depressivos nessa população. Este estudo teve por objetivo fazer uma revisão da literatura internacional acerca da relação entre doenças cardiovasculares e depressão em populações idosas. O estudo consistiu em uma busca sistemática na base de dados Pubmed, utilizando como palavras-chave os termos em inglês “cardiovascular disease”, “depression” e “elderly”. Escolheu-se como parâmetro o intervalo de 2008 a 2013, e após leitura e triagem, selecionou-se 23 artigos para análise.
