Association between perception of oral health and demand for dental services by pregnant women

Objective: It was aimed analyze the demand for dental care and the profile of pregnant women.Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study of documentary analysis conducted at a Clinic of Dental Care for Pregnant Women in a public university. The oral health data were collected in 954 records of pregnant women attended between 1999 and 2014. The variables studied were: demand for dental care during pregnancy, sociodemographic conditions, perception and orientation on oral health. For the data processing, Epi Info software was used and statistical tests were carried out at a significance level of 5% by the Bioestat program.Results: The mean age of pregnant women was 26 years, 55.56% (n=530) white, 74.84% (n=714) lived with their partner, 44.76% (n=427) worked, 44.23% (n=422) were on first gestation. Among the demand of pregnant women, the majority (n=493) reported having noticed gingival bleeding; 57.53% (n=210) did not have a healthy mouth; 68.31% (n=248) were not happy with the appearance of their teeth. The demand for dental care was more frequent among pregnant women who did not feel their mouth healthy (p=0.01) and received guidance on oral health during pregnancy (p=0.00). It was observed that 74.63% (n=712) of the pregnant women noticed some oral alteration during gestation, but the majority (53.87%) did not seek dental care.Conclusion: It was concluded that was little demand for dental care by pregnant women, even with real treatment needs and oral changes.
