Association between perception of oral health and demand for dental services by pregnant women

Resumo: Objective: It was aimed analyze the demand for dental care and the profile of pregnant women.Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study of documentary analysis conducted at a Clinic of Dental Care for Pregnant Women in a public university. The oral health data were collected in 954 records of pregnant women attended between 1999 and 2014. The variables studied were: demand for dental care during pregnancy, sociodemographic conditions, perception and orientation on oral health. For the data processing, Epi Info software was used and statistical tests were carried out at a significance level of 5% by the Bioestat program.Results: The mean age of pregnant women was 26 years, 55.56% (n=530) white, 74.84% (n=714) lived with their partner, 44.76% (n=427) worked, 44.23% (n=422) were on first gestation. Among the demand of pregnant women, the majority (n=493) reported having noticed gingival bleeding; 57.53% (n=210) did not have a healthy mouth; 68.31% (n=248) were not happy with the appearance of their teeth. The demand for dental care was more frequent among pregnant women who did not feel their mouth healthy (p=0.01) and received guidance on oral health during pregnancy (p=0.00). It was observed that 74.63% (n=712) of the pregnant women noticed some oral alteration during gestation, but the majority (53.87%) did not seek dental care.Conclusion: It was concluded that was little demand for dental care by pregnant women, even with real treatment needs and oral changes.

Os dados de saúde bucal foram coletados em 954 prontuários das gestantes atendidas entre 1999 e 2014. As variáveis estudadas foram: procura por atendimento odontológico, condições sociodemográficas e percepção sobre saúde bucal. Os dados foram analisados no software Epi Info e testes estatísticos foram realizados em nível de significância de 5%.Resultados: A média de idade das gestantes foi de 26 anos, 55,56% (n=530) brancas, 74,84% (n=714) residiam com o companheiro, 44,76% (n=427) trabalhavam, 44,23% (n=422) eram primigestas. Em relação a procura pelo serviço odontológico, a maioria (n=493) relatou sangramento gengival; 57,53% (n=210) não sentiam a boca saudável; 68,31% (n=248) não estavam satisfeitas com a aparência dos dentes. A procura por atendimento odontológico foi mais frequente entre gestantes que não sentiam sua boca saudável (p=0,01).
