Manipulative actions and stimulation of play with cubes in children with low vision

Objective: Describe the manipulative actions and games created by children with and without low vision during playing with cubes of different sensory stimuli.Materials and methods: cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study. Fourteen children with and without low vision (8.8 years±1.02) participated, they were filmed during playing with six cubes: transparent, black, high contrast, luminous, auditory and tactile stimulation. The order of delivery was randomized and the permanence with each cube was 40 seconds. In the end, the child was asked to elaborate games with the cubes.Results: The motor actions identified were: Remove the cube, stir the cube, reach (Uni and bimanual), approximate the cube of the eyes, hit with the cube, hit the cube, slide hands/fingers, rotate the cube, throw the cube upwards, support the cube on one of the edges, close your eyes to the cube, hold the cube with just one hand, touch the face in the cube. Some jokes were common in both groups and the predominant play, which involved all the cubes, was to stack them. Conclusion: Fourteen manipulative actions were described. It is suggested the creation of toys and games that use colors and contrasts.
