Uma agremiação a serviço do bairro: O Vila Isabel Futebol Clube (1910-1941)

Resumo: In 1910, Vila Isabel Futebol Clube was founded. Our intention is, when discussing the trajectory of this association, to dedicate attention to its participation in the outlining of a profile for the neighborhood in which it was located, to perceive how its actions intertwined with the surroundings of its headquarters. The option to investigate this sports association was due to its corporate structure. Its members came from the middle and upper strata who lived in Vila Isabel or nearby, not belonging, however, to the highest socioeconomic strata who lived in the most valued neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. The club was an expression of an “intermediate elite” in the city. In addition, it had to deal with the social heterogeneity of the region where it was located. “Small, but with big initiatives”: this is how a chronicler referred to Vila Isabel on the occasion of its tenth anniversary. We believe that these characteristics allow us to perceive something of the city’s societal movements, as well as their insertion in spatial records.

La opción de investigar esta asociación deportiva se debió a su estructura societaria. Sus integrantes procedían de los estratos medios y altos que vivían en Vila Isabel o alrededores, no perteneciendo, sin embargo, a los estratos socioeconómicos más altos que vivían en los barrios más valorados de Río de Janeiro. El club era expresión de una “élite intermedia” en la ciudad. Además, tuvo que lidiar con la heterogeneidad social de la región donde se ubicaba. “Pequeño, pero con grandes iniciativas”: así se refirió un cronista al Vila Isabel en su décimo aniversario. Creemos que estas características nos permiten percibir algo de los movimientos sociales de la ciudad, así como su inserción en los registros espaciales.Em 1910, foi fundado o Vila Isabel Futebol Clube. Nosso intuito é, ao discutir a trajetória dessa agremiação, dedicar atenção a sua participação no delineamento de um perfil para o bairro no qual se encontrava, perceber como suas ações se imbricavam com o entorno de sua sede. A opção por investigar essa associação esportiva deveu-se a sua conformação societária. Seus membros eram oriundos de estratos médio e alto que viviam em Vila Isabel ou nas redondezas, não pertencendo, todavia, aos mais elevados escalões socioeconômicos que moravam nos bairros mais valorizados do Rio de Janeiro. O clube era uma expressão de uma “elite intermediária” da cidade. Além disso, teve que lidar com a heterogeneidade social da região onde se localizava. “Pequeno, mas de grandes iniciativas”: assim se referiu ao Vila Isabel um cronista por ocasião de seu décimo aniversário.
