Resumo: Darcy Ribeiro was present at a crucial moment for the creation of an indigenous movement of interregional character in Brazil, in a seminar that resulted in the creation of the Union of Indigenous Nations (UNI), in Campo Grande, in April 1980. In dialogue with the speeches by the anthropologist at this event and in the well-known controversy of 1979 with Roberto Da Matta, the two authors, based on their research on the history of the indigenous movement in Brazil, discuss the meaning of Darcy's public actions and pronouncements in the period of the country's redemocratization.
