Resumo: This article addresses the preponderant role that China has acquired as a new trading partner of Latin America, based on the opportunity that the wave of progressive governments in the region, which began with the arrival of Hugo Chávez to the presidency of Venezuela, represented for the Asian giant. This relationship, which has gradually revealed its asymmetry and the configuration of a new dependency in the region, is analyzed within the framework of China's relocation from the periphery to the center of the world economy. To approach the subject, the specific cases of Venezuela and Brazil, two of the countries with the largest reserves of natural and energy resources in the world, are considered.
