Green areas are essential for maintaining the quality of life in urban spaces. However, these sites that help in the ecological balance of cities are increasingly absent. In view of the table, this article aims to analyze the environmental degradation problems of the green area of ​​the Boa Vista neighborhood known as "Matinha" in Araxá - Minas Gerais. The work includes the perception of the local population regarding the area in the geographical context of the neighborhood. In order to reach the proposed objective, the methodological procedures include, bibliographic review on the subject, on-site fieldwork and an empirical research with application of questionnaires. The results obtained will be presented through descriptive analyzes, photographs, maps, graphs and tables. After analysis, it is concluded that the green area of ​​the Boa Vista neighborhood receives no attention from the public power and adds to that, the degradation of the Matinha by nearby residents. It should be noted that the transformation of the current reality will only be possible through a partnership between community and government. Performing a thorough environmental awareness work with the local population is essential to balance the relationship between society and nature.
