São Francisco River: a place-territory

Resumo: The article aims to first discuss the theoretical and conceptual foundations that guide the geographical categories place and territory and, based on their respective similarities, present a hybrid / composed reading of these categories, forming the place-territory. These similarities are based on the processes of material and symbolic appropriation, on the identities and the sense of belonging that make up these categories. As an empirical reference for analysis, the São Francisco river is used in its low course, whose spatiality is characterized by the diverse complexity of uses and appropriations that are revealed both by reading the place and by reading the territory. Thus, this complexity observed in the experiences with the river and in semi-structured interviews outlined the fundamentals that make riverside spatiality a place-territory.

Estas similitudes se basan en los procesos de apropiación material y simbólica, en las identidades y el sentido de pertenencia que conforman estas categorías. Como referencia empírica para el análisis, el río São Francisco se utiliza en su curso bajo, cuya espacialidad se caracteriza por la diversa complejidad de usos y apropiaciones que se revelan tanto al leer el lugar como al leer el territorio. Por lo tanto, esta complejidad observada en las experiencias con el río y en entrevistas semiestructuradas esbozó los fundamentos que hacen de la espacialidad ribereña un lugar-territorio.O artigo tem como objetivo primeiro discutir os fundamentos teóricos e conceituais que norteiam as categorias geográficas lugar e território e, a partir de suas respectivas similitudes, apresentar uma leitura híbrida/composta dessas categorias, formando o lugar-território. Essas similitudes estão assentadas nos processos de apropriação material e simbólica, nas identidades e no sentido do pertencimento que conformam essas categorias. Utiliza-se como referência empírica de análise o rio São Francisco em seu baixo curso, cuja espacialidade é caracterizada pela complexidade diversa de usos e apropriações revelada tanto pela leitura do lugar quanto pela leitura do território.
