Resumo: The survey is an instrument of change compared to the results that can serve as a basis for public policies that meet the needs of the population. Thus, this paper aims to discuss the contribution of the State University of Montes Claros - UNIMONTES and Department of Geosciences and the research in the North of Minas. The methodology consisted of literature and documentary. It was concluded that the Institution and Geography course in its 50 year history, contributed to the region through training of professionals, development and implementation of research projects, strengthening the quality public education and subsidizing public policy.

Nesse sentido, esse trabalho visa discutir a contribuição da Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros - UNIMONTES e do Departamento de Geociências quanto à pesquisa no norte de Minas. A metodologia utilizada consistiu-se em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental.
