Aroldo de Azevedo was an important author of geography textbooks, whose most significant production took place between the 1940s and 1970s. His works were widely adopted in Brazilian schools, and the author enjoyed a great deal of prestige both in academia and in school. In this article, result of more extensive research, we present the author's biography and a brief inventory of his production. The reading of one of his widely disseminated works, entitled "O Mundo em que vivemos" – The World in which we live, 1960s decade, makes it possible to interpret some passages, in which the author reveals certain postures considered elitist, as well as conceptual mistake about possibilism and geographic determinism. In the perspective of the indiciaire paradigm, based on documentary research, the presentation of a didactic text of excellent technical quality was observed. However, despite being a work intended for school purposes, for a reading public in the process of basic academic training, its technical quality obscures its school purpose and conceals its elitist ideological message.
