We can say that the basic principles of water management in Brazil have not been respected throughout the national territory. This assertion is based on our researches done in the North of Minas, specifically the sub-basins Riachão in Montes Claros, MG and Gorutuba in Nova Porteirinha and Janaúba / MG, where the local population has suffered from the lack of water due to the intensification of the capitalist activities in the field (agricultural modernization) and the strong disrespect with the local forms of water management that we will call as community management of water. In this sense, this paper aims to discuss the use and manage ment of water in the North of Minas Gerais, through the study of Riachão sub-basins and Gorutuba located in areas economically “developed” in the region. To this, we have adopted a methodology based on a literature review, interviews with official bodies and NGOs, as well as interviews with the users in the rural communities.
