PRODUCTION OF BIODIESEL WITH METHYL ACETATE PRESSURIZED WITHOUT GENERATING GLYCEROL

Resumo: In this review, we consider biodiesel production using the transesterification and interesterification route in pressurized medium. Although the transesterification route is commonly applied in biodiesel production, this process is associated with some drawbacks and these challenges are described in this article. Alternatively, the proposal of biodiesel production through interesterification in pressurized medium was approached, focusing on the use of methyl acetate and promising triacetin production instead of glycerol. The process addressed presents the following positive findings: it requires no catalyst, thus reducing the complexity and costs associated with biodiesel production, if offers a simpler process that is tolerant to various types of vegetable oils, associated with high reaction rates, it allows greater homogeneity of the mixture in the reaction, finally, it provides a higher added value co-product compared to glycerol when it comes to interesterification using methyl acetate as acyl acceptor.

Nesta revisão, a produção de biodiesel utilizando a rota de transesterificação e de interesterificação em meio pressurizado foram considerados. Embora a rota de transesterificação seja comumente aplicada para a produção de biodiesel, este processo está associado a alguns inconvenientes, sendo estes desafios descritos neste artigo. Como alternativa, a proposta de produção de biodiesel através da interesterificação em meio pressurizado foi abordada, com enfoque na utilização do metil acetato e a produção promissora da triacetina em vez do glicerol. O processo abordado apresenta as seguintes constatações positivas, não necessitar de catalisador, reduzindo assim a complexidade e os custos associados com a produção de biodiesel, oferecendo um processo mais simples, que é tolerante a vários tipos de óleos vegetais, alta taxa de reação, associada a maior homogeneidade da mistura na reação e a obtenção de um coproduto de maior valor agregado se comparado ao glicerol, quando se trata da interesterificação empregando o metil acetato como acil aceptor.
