Piracy and audiovisual streaming: the growth and the legal consequences of illegal online video distribution

Resumo: This article aims to verify the growth of online piracy in the face of audiovisual streaming platforms through studies drawn from international journals specializing in online video traffic and global piracy, as well as addressing the legal consequences of illegal video distribution. Firstly, it will talk about the basic concepts related to intellectual property and copyright, discuss the protection of the branch based on copyright legislation - Law No. 9,610 - and then trace a relationship between audiovisual streaming and the growth of digital piracy worldwide. Subsequently, the article will discuss the legal consequences of the illegal distribution of intellectual works on cyberspace and the impact of piracy on the Brazilian economy. To this end, a deductive approach was performed using the explanatory method to describe the aspects of the study in a qualitative character, using bibliographic material, electronic articles, jurisprudence, international journals and jurisdictional texts extracted from current legislation.

Primeiramente serão estudados os conceitos básicos referentes a propriedade intelectual e direitos autorais, discutindo-se a proteção do ramo com base na legislação autoral - Lei nº 9.610 - e em seguida traçando uma relação existente entre o streaming audiovisual e o crescimento da pirataria digital mundialmente. Posteriormente, discorrerá acerca dos efeitos jurídicos da distribuição ilegal de obras intelectuais no ciberespaço e o impacto da pirataria na economia do Brasil.
