Resumo: The improper disposal of solid waste in the environment represents a major challenge for humanity, especially in developing countries, due to the vulnerability of a significant portion of their population. Waste from health services requires greater attention, since they represent a threat to the environment and to health. The objective of this research was to investigate the state of environmental awareness, the pro-environmental behaviour and the quality of waste management in health services in a federal institution of higher education (IFES – Instituição Federal de Ensino Superior), establishing the relationship between these three constructs. A descriptive research was carried out,as a survey, with data obtained through the application of questionnaires in a sample of 154 participants. Likert scale was used with level of agreement from zero to ten with regard to statements that make up the constructs surveyed. The structural equation modeling allowed for the study of the relationships between the three dimensions. Among the models tested, the best fitted one revealed a significant relationship between environmental awareness and pro-environmental behaviour, and between this and the quality management of waste from health services. Environmental awareness influence in the quality of waste management has not been proven.

Environmental awareness influence in the quality of waste management has not been proven.La eliminación inadecuada de los residuos sólidos en el medio ambiente es un reto importante para la humanidad, especialmente en los países en desarrollo, dado la vulnerabilidad de una parte significativa de su población. Existen residuos en los servicios de salud, que exigen una mayor atención, ya que representan una fuerte amenaza para el medio ambiente y la salud. El objetivo de esta investigación fue investigar el estado de la conciencia ambiental, la calidad de los servicios de salud de comportamiento y de gestión de residuos pro-ambientales en una Institución Federal de Educación Superior - IFES, estableciendo la relación entre estas tres construcciones. Un estudio descriptivo se llevó a cabo, el tipo de encuesta, con los datos obtenidos a través de cuestionarios en una muestra de 154 participantes. Se utilizó la escala de Likert con un grado de concordancia de cero a diez con respecto a las declaraciones que conforman las construcciones. El modelo de ecuaciones estructurales permitió el estudio de la relación entre las tres dimensiones, entre los modelos probados, el mejor ajuste mostró una relación significativa entre la conciencia ambiental y el comportamiento pro-ambiental, entre ésta y la calidad de los servicios de gestión de residuos de salud. Se comprobó la influencia de la conciencia ambiental en la calidad de la gestión de residuos.A disposição inadequada dos resíduos sólidos no meio ambiente representa um grande desafio para a humanidade, especialmente nos países em desenvolvimento, em face da vulnerabilidade de uma parcela expressiva de sua população. Os resíduos em serviços de saúde demandam maior atenção, uma vez que representam forte ameaça ao meio ambiente e à saúde. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar o estado da consciência ambiental, do comportamento pró-ambiental e da qualidade do gerenciamento dos resíduos em serviços de saúde em uma Instituição Federal de Ensino Superior – IFES, estabelecendo a relação entre esses três construtos. Foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva, tipo survey, com dados obtidos por meio da aplicação de questionários em uma amostra composta por 154 participantes. Foi utilizada a escala Likert com grau de concordância de zero a dez em relação às afirmativas que compõem os construtos pesquisados. A modelagem de equações estruturais possibilitou o estudo das relações entre as três dimensões, entre os modelos testados, o de melhor ajuste revelou significativa relação entre a consciência ambiental e o comportamento pró-ambiental, e entre este e a qualidade do gerenciamento dos resíduos de serviços em saúde.
