A proposal to use risk management for the Academic Planning of a Public University

Several problems caused by lack of risk analysis can directly impact the execution of projects in organizations. The universities can use risk management as a set of coordinated activities to direct and control their projects, trying to minimize the impacts caused in academic contexts. The present study aims to propose solutions for possible risks that may impact academic planning, through a qualitative and exploratory methodology, to investigate, identify and analyze such risks in order to create a contingency plan for mitigation and reduction of impacts in one semester. A total of 34 answers were analyzed among teachers, students and administrative staff. Firstly, the risks were identified and grouped into four areas, next the impact and probability of these risks occurring in the researched institution were evaluated; finally, a contingency and containment plan was proposed. In this way, it was possible to analyze that the risks in universities can cause several impacts in the semester. Applied researches with stakeholders can be an efficient mechanism to identify and prioritize these risks. Identifying the impact and probability of risks enable to the academic managers a quickly response to identified problems.
