THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENTS FROM THE SENIOR CAREGIVING COURSE IN THE SOUTHERN FLUMINENSE REGION: FROM SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDGE TO LABOR-MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Resumo: The world population aging requires curricula focused on professional qualification for those who work with senior housing, nursing home, assisted living and in-home healthcare. This is a descriptive study, with both qualitative and quantitative approach, that identified the expectations of 40 students from the Senior Caregiving Course, when the theoretical program was presented before practical training in senior houses located in Três Rios, southern fluminense region. The data analysis was determined by the answer of three open questions applied to students on the second term of 2009. The conclusion was that 82,5% from those who searched this course aimed to enlarge their knowledge. Other 25% was looking for better job opportunities; 42,5% were nurses or auxiliaries who intended to apply the knowledge provided by the course directly on their work; while 37,5% intended to apply this same knowledge at home. At last, 45% declared that wanted to get caregiving training on elderly people, as 22,5% wanted to acquire knowledge for life. Descriptors: Caregivers. Health of the Elderly. Nursing care. Asylum.

Asylum.O envelhecimento da população mundial requer o implemento de programas de ensino focados na qualificação profissional de pessoas para atuar no cuidado de idosos nas instituições de longa permanência e nos domicílios. Trata-se de estudo descritivo com abordagem quanti-qualitativa, que objetivou identificar as expectativas de 40 estudantes do curso para cuidadores de idosos, ao ser apresentado conteúdo teórico e antes do estágio prático em unidades de longa permanência para idosos localizadas na cidade de Três Rios, região centro-sul fluminense. A análise dos dados pautou-se na perspectiva da análise de discurso, a partir do coletado através de instrumento que abordou três questões abertas, aplicado no segundo semestre de 2009. Conclui-se que 82,5% procura o curso com fins de ampliar seus conhecimentos, outros 25% buscam oportunidade no mercado de trabalho; 42,5% declara que pretende aplicar os conhecimentos advindos do curso na profissão que exercem, pois atuam na área de enfermagem (técnicos e auxiliares), enquanto 37,5% pretende aplicar em casa; por fim, 45% declara esperar do curso capacitação para cuidar de pessoas idosas, ao passo que 22,5% espera adquirir conhecimentos para a vida.
