Sustainable development and social-ecological resilience: agenda for a sustainable transition of territories

It is assumed that the various problems related to the development process of the regions come up against the lack of consideration of issues and relations about the environment-society binomial. In this article, we are concerned with the following question: how to make communities more resilient to externalities brought on productive dynamics and, consequently, developed in the sustainability lens? The article aims to develop a research and social practice agenda aimed at explaining and promoting sustainable transitions in territories, through a bibliometric research based on the terms sustainable development and social-ecological resilience. The bibliometric analysis focused on identifying the main theoretical and methodological references and the fundamental themes addressed in the selected studies between the years 2000 and 2020. The analysis of the articles allowed the identification of three main approaches: a) studies on the reduction of risk to socio-environmental disasters; b) assessment of the resilience of ecosystem services and; c) the development of public policies for the management of natural resources. The common point among the analyzed articles is the search for identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and looking for solutions to minimize the negative impacts of anthropic action in the natural environment. Therefore, it is suggested as an agenda for future research the examination of issues related, mainly, to the development of efficient methodologies for the assessment of the resilience capacity of both the natural and social environment, facing the impacts of human activities and changes climate. Furthermore, the results expose the need for a risk and resilience governance practice agenda, with strong social participation.
