Resumo: | The paper presents a line of research that has been developed at the Masters Degree graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning on the University of Vale do Paraíba, SP, Brazil. The approach seek to connect knowledge from different fields of knowledge (sociology, anthropology, discourse analysis, history) focusing on the formation of collective identities based on the configuration and use of urban space. More specifically, it is discussed the policy of preservation of the historical patrimony of the city of Sao Jose dos Campos, state of São Paulo, seeking to perceive it as part of a process in which segments of the hegemonic population attempt to impose its particular representation of the city. It is then approached in the study the exclusion of the population majority of the discussions and change of local elites, leading to a deletion of the marks of the old period when the organization of the city was directed towards the tuberculosis disease treatment. Then, it was perceived that this approach cannot be restricted to what is said about the city, bus has to be extended to how the city speaks about itself through the configuration of its urban space. |

Nesta abordagem buscamos articular conhecimento oriundo de diferentes áreas do conhecimento (Sociologia, Antropologia, Análise do Discurso, História) tendo como foco a formação de identidades a partir da configuração e do uso do espaço urbano. Mais especificamente, discutimos a política de preservação do patrimônio cultural na cidade de São José dos Campos, estado de São Paulo, buscando apreendê-la como parte de um processo em que segmentos hegemônicos da população buscam impor uma determinada representação da cidade. Abordamos o apagamento não só de marcas de um passado que organizou a cidade em função da cura da tuberculose (1900-1940) como também das memórias das pessoas que viveram esse tempo. Percebemos que a cidade é a materialização do que se diz sobre ela e como ela se diz. Como o objeto do enunciado está evidenciado na configuração do seu espaço, a leitura que se faz não só da manutenção como do processo dos bens elencados para serem preservados, de certa forma, acabam por representá-la. Abordamos acerca dos resultados da exclusão popular no processo de preservação do patrimônio histórico e cultural da comunidade de São José dos Campos, sobretudo os reflexos sobre a percepção que a população tem da cidade e de seu passado, tornando complexo o sentimento de pertencimento.
