Economically active children and child labor in the states South region of Brazil

The article aimed to discuss child labor in states southern Brazil in the light of the concepts of economically active child and child labor. To this end, we used the concept of child labor of the International Labor Organization and the microdata of the National Household Sample Survey, conducted by IBGE in 2015, regarding children and adolescents from 5 to 17 years. It was found that in the southern region of Brazil, in that year, more than 500,000 economically active children and teenagers in this age group. In terms of proportion, it means that of all children and adolescents in the region, about 10% were engaged in economic activities. In child labor condition were more than 210 thousand individuals, most of them were older teenagers who even had those with workload of more than 50 hours per week. This means that measures to combat child labor must also be attentive to adolescents over 15 years old, as well as being in child labor condition, many are in occupations considered dangerous and harmful to their development.
