Resumo: In Portugal, the first undergraduate course in Social Communication was founded only in 1979, at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). The first university school that included Journalism in the name was the Escola Superior de Jornalismo do Porto, founded in 1986. The first undergraduate course that adopted the designation of Journalism was established at the University of Coimbra, only in 1993. However, since the late nineteenth century that Portuguese theorists debate the establishment of undergraduate and graduate Journalism courses in the country. This text aims to revisit some of the contributions that historically have been given to the national debate on Journalism education from the late nineteenth century until 1979, when the UNL’s Communication course was settled. Among the conclusions, it is possible to emphasise the idea that the introduction of undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism has not been peaceful and had many enemies, even among journalists themselves. Moreover, resistance to more specific training in Journalism to pursue the profession of journalist still manifests itself within the Union of Journalists (Sindicato dos Jornalistas). This trade union maintains that, although desirable, holding a bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communication Sciences should not be compulsory for anyone who wants to be a journalist.

Verso e Reverso2010-01-12info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersiontext/htmlhttps://revistas.unisinos.br/index.php/versoereverso/article/view/576710.4013/5767Verso e Reverso; v. 23 n. 54: Ano XXIII - 2009/31806-6925reponame:Verso e Reverso (Online)instname:Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS)instacron:UNISINOSporhttps://revistas.unisinos.br/index.php/versoereverso/article/view/5767/3137Sousa, Jorge Pedroinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2013-10-15T16:39:18Zoai:ojs2.revistas.unisinos.br:article/5767Revistahttp://revistas.unisinos.br/index.php/versoereversoPRIhttp://revistas.unisinos.br/index.php/versoereverso/oaiperiodicos@unisinos.br||bmarocco@unisinos.br1806-69250103-1414opendoar:2013-10-15T16:39:18Verso e Reverso (Online) - Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS)false
