Resumo: The article presents the results of a research focused on the history of the Public Cleaning Service in the city of Pelotas (Brazil, RS), in the period between 1875 and 1925. Within this time frame, the research explored the growing concern of the public power with o the removal of fecal matter and wastewater in cubes and with the risks that this practice represented for urban health. By consulting documentary sources, we seek to understand how the municipality of Pelotas attacked the problem of collection and disposal of fecal matter. The documents indicate that, from 1903 onwards, health concerns coexisted with administrative strategies aimed at balancing revenue and expenditure that Public Cleanliness generated annually for the municipality's coffers.

Dentro deste marco temporal, a pesquisa explorou a crescente preocupação do poder público com o a remoção das matérias fecais e águas servidas em cubos e com os riscos que está prática representava para a salubridade urbana. Por meio da consulta em fontes documentais, buscamos compreender como a municipalidade pelotense atacou o problema da coleta e descarte das matérias fecais.
