Resumo: The present study aimed to identify the strategic responses given to institutional pressures relating to sustainability in internationalized companies of the furniture industry of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The research was characterized as exploratory with qualitative approach, and it was operationalized through exploratory interviews with three companies. To identify the strategic responses to institutional pressures to the sustainability, the model by Oliver (1991) was used. The results showed a distinct strategic response behavior in companies analyzed. While some suggest more passive responses as acquiescence, other demonstrated more active commitment decisions and escape.

La investigación fue caracterizada con enfoque cualitativo exploratorio y fue realizada a través de entrevistas exploratorias con tres empresas. Para identificar las respuestas estratégicas a las presiones institucionales para la sostenibilidad se utilizó el modelo de Oliver (1991). Los resultados mostraron un comportamiento distinto de respuesta estratégica en las empresas analizadas. Mientras que algunas sugieren respuestas más pasivas, como aquiescencia; otras demostraron decisiones de compromiso más activas y escape.O presente estudo objetivou identificar as respostas estratégicas dadas às pressões institucionais relativas à sustentabilidade em empresas internacionalizadas do setor moveleiro do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). A pesquisa caracterizou-se como exploratória com abordagem qualitativa e foi operacionalizada por meio de entrevistas exploratórias com três empresas. Para identificar as respostas estratégicas às pressões institucionais para a sustentabilidade utilizou-se do modelo de Oliver (1991). Os resultados apontaram comportamento de respostas estratégicas distinto entre as empresas analisadas.
