Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to present a debate and research agenda for a critical theory of discourse, relating it, on the one hand, to critical social theory and, on the other, to systemic functional linguistics. Fundamental concepts in the critical theory of discourse are: social practice, social event, genre and text. Textually oriented discourse analysis (TODA) proposes to understand social practices in a dialectical view of discourse, involving genres and meaning construction in texts: actions (genres), representations (discourses), identifications (styles). Three important moments in the development of this theory, as well as points for future research, are presented.

Conceptos centrales, en la teoría crítica del discurso, son aquellos de práctica social, evento social, género discursivo y texto. El análisis de discurso textualmente orientado (ADTO) constituye una propuesta de comprensión de las prácticas sociales en la  concepción dialéctica del discurso, envolviendo géneros discursivos y la construcción de sentidos en los textos: acciones (géneros), representaciones (discursos), identificaciones (estilos). Se presentan tres momentos significativos del desarrollo de la teoría, así como se destacan puntos para futuras investigaciones.Le propos de cet article est celui de présenter une agenda pour le débat et la recherche de la théorie critique du discours, en la rapportant, d’une part, à la théorie sociale critique, et, d’autre part, à la linguistique systémique-fonctionnelle. Des concepts centraux dans la théorie critique du discours sont ceux de la pratique sociale, événement social, genre discursif et texte. L’analyse du discours textuellement orientée (ADTO) est une proposition de compréhension des pratiques sociales dans la conception dialectique du discours, entourant des genres discursifs et la construction de sens dans les textes: actions (genres), représentations (discours), identifications (styles). Trois moments significatifs dans le dévéloppement de la théorie sont présentés, de la même façon que des points pour des futures recherches sont ressortis.O propósito deste artigo é apresentar uma agenda para o debate e a pesquisa da teoria crítica do discurso, relacionando-a, por um lado, à teoria social crítica e, por outro, à lingüística sistêmico-funcional.
