Literacy, linguistic variation and the teaching of Portuguese

Resumo: The present paper is intended as a contribution for elementary and high school teachers as it briefly discusses the implications both of the myth of literacy and of the work with linguistic variety in the teaching of the Portuguese language, based on the discussion by Marcuschi and Bagno (among others) on that issue. In order to do so the concept of literacy will be discussed, as well as how the myth is built and the difficulties in the teaching caused by linguistic variation. This text does not intend to offer solutions; it just incites one to search by pointing some clues.

Por lo que antes se ha dicho, discutiremos el concepto de letradura, cómo se construye el mito, y las dificultades en la enseñanza ocasionadas por la variante lingüística. El texto no pretende ofrecer soluciones, sino apuntar algunas huellas para impulsar la investigación.Ce texte, visant contribuer avec le travail des professeurs de l’enseignement fondamental et secondaire, tisse une brève réflexion sur les implications du mythe de l’alphabétisation, tout comme un travail sur les variations linguistiques, dans l’enseignement de la langue portugaise, centrée dans les discussions de Marcuschi et Bagno (parmi d’autres) sur ce sujet. Avec cet objectif, nous discuterons le concept d’alphabétisation, aussi bien que la manière dont on construit un mythe, et les difficultés dans l’enseignement provoquées par la variaton linguistique. Ce texte n’a pas l’intention d’offrir des solutions, mais d’inciter la recherche tout en signalant quelques pistes.O presente texto, visando contribuir para o trabalho de professores do ensino fundamental e médio, tece uma breve reflexão sobre as implicações do mito do letramento, bem como do trabalho com as variedades lingüísticas, no ensino da língua portuguesa, pautada nas discussões de Marcuschi e Bagno (entre outros) acerca do assunto. Para tanto, discutiremos o conceito de letramento, como se constrói o mito, e as dificuldades no ensino causadas pela variação lingüística.
