The trajectory of Japan's image towards Western countries demonstrates that the imagined construction about this country did not remain unchanged over time, rather, it was in constant change due to the different types of relations that Western countries maintained with the archipelago. However, a series of stereotypes about Japan and its culture were consolidated along the way. Such pre-established stereotypes often play a mediating role in the way individuals perceive and understand the cultural production of Japan as being typically Japanese or not. This type of vision interfered in the way Japanese animation was approached, mainly through the influences of thoughts involved in the logic of Mukokuseki and Nihonjinron. Thus, we trace a reflection on these two approaches and provide a critical alternative to these perspectives.
