The grandparents’ collaboration in their grandchildren’s education

Resumo: The family has moved away from its traditional form, due to the social and cultural changes which have occurred over the years, and, because of this, some other forms of "modern" families have emerged. This study has the following main objectives: check the types of grandparents-grandchildren’s relationships, as well as the values transmitted by the grandparents to their grandchildren and analyze the role of intergenerational grandparent-grandchildren relations in the development of children. It is an exploratory study and no other study in Portugal was found to help us. 120 children of the 1ST cycle of basic education, 8 teachers and 200 grandparents and parents participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews were used to teachers, parents and grandparents and structured interviews were used to children. It is expected a contribution to the understanding of the influence of grandparents in the education of their grandchildren, as well as in the development of preventive strategies for the extended families.

Este estudio tiene como objetivos principales: constatar qué tipo de relación existe entre abuelos y nietos y los valores aprobados por los abuelos y los nietos y comprender el papel de las relaciones intergeneracionales entre abuelos y nietos en el desarrollo de los niños. Se trata de un estudio exploratorio y no tenemos conocimiento en Portugal de otros estudios para la comparación. Participaron en el estudio 120 niños de la primer ciclo de educación básica, ocho maestros y 200 padres y abuelos. Se utilizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con los maestros, padres y abuelos y estructuradas con los niños. Se espera que este estudio contribuya a la comprensión de la relación de los abuelos en la crianza de sus nietos, así como el desarrollo de estrategias de prevención para las familias extensas.A família tem-se vindo a afastar da sua forma tradicional, devido às transformações sociais e culturais que se têm verificado ao longo dos tempos, fazendo emergir outras formas de família de cariz “moderno”. Este estudo tem como principais objetivos: Constatar que tipo de relações existe entre avós e netos e valores passados pelos avós aos netos e compreender o papel das relações intergeracionais avós-netos no desenvolvimento das crianças. É um estudo exploratório e não temos conhecimento a nível de Portugal de outros estudos para o compararmos. Participaram neste estudo 120 crianças do 1º ciclo do ensino básico, 8 professores e 200 avós e pais. Utilizamos entrevistas semi-estruturadas aos professores, pais e avós e estruturadas às crianças.
