SOCIAL SKILLS OF COUPLES AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE FAMILY LIFE CYCLE

Resumo: | Traditionally, the cycle of family life is marked by stages and the spouses experience challenging situations in daily life, difficulties and transformations associated with the development of marriage which require various skills. This study aimed to investigate if there are differences in social skills and marital social skills of couples in different stages of the family life cycle. The participants were 442 heterosexual individuals with ages ranging between 21 and 79 years (M = 43.7, SD = 12.25). The instruments used were Social Skills Inventory and the Marital Social Skills Inventory. A MANOVA was performed to investigate differences between groups. The results showed significant differences in social skills between couples without children and couples with children between 0 and 11 years old and in social skills between couples with children older than 18 years old and the other groups. It is concluded that there is differences on the social skills of individuals in the period of arrival of children and greater elaboration of conjugal social skills in couples whose children are independent. It is expected to contribute to the development of trainings of conjugal social skills and preparatory resources for married life that promote healthy and quality-of-life relationships. |

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar si existen diferencias en las habilidades sociales y las habilidades sociales maritales de las parejas en diferentes etapas del ciclo de vida familiar. Los participantes fueron 442 individuos heterosexuales con edades comprendidas entre 21 y 79 años (M = 43,7, DE = 12,25). Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el Inventario de Habilidades Sociales y el Inventario de Habilidades Sociales Maritales. Se realizó un MANOVA para investigar las diferencias entre grupos. Los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas en las habilidades sociales entre las parejas sin hijos y las parejas con niños entre 0 y 11 años y en las habilidades sociales entre las parejas con niños mayores de 18 años y los otros grupos. Se concluye que existen diferencias en las habilidades sociales de las personas en el período de llegada de los niños y una mayor elaboración de las habilidades sociales conyugales en las parejas cuyos hijos son independientes. Se espera que contribuya al desarrollo de capacitaciones de habilidades sociales conyugales y recursos preparatorios para la vida conyugal que promuevan relaciones saludables y de calidad de vida.Tradicionalmente, o ciclo de vida familiar é marcado por etapas e os cônjuges vivenciam situações desafiadoras no cotidiano, dificuldades e transformações associadas ao desenvolvimento do casamento que exigem diversas habilidades. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar se existem diferenças nas habilidades sociais e nas habilidades sociais conjugais de casais em diferentes etapas do ciclo de vida familiar. Participaram 442 indivíduos heterossexuais com idades variando entre 21 e 79 anos (M = 43,7, DP = 12,25). Foram utilizados o Inventário de Habilidades Sociais e o Inventário de Habilidades Sociais Conjugais. Foi realizada uma MANOVA para comparar os grupos. Os resultados apontaram diferenças significativas nas habilidades sociais entre casais sem filhos e casais com filhos entre 0 e 11 anos e nas habilidades sociais entre casais com filhos maiores de 18 anos e os demais grupos. Conclui-se que é possível observar diferenças nas habilidades sociais dos indivíduos no período de chegada dos filhos e uma maior elaboração das habilidades sociais conjugais em casais cujos filhos são independentes.
