WEAVING LOVINGNESS IN LIFE AND DEATH STORIES: EXPERIENCES OF DEATH DOULAS

Resumo: This study aims at investigating the experiences of death Doulas in Brazil. It is a qualitative piece of research and was carried with 20 death Doulas who were trained and work in Brazil, aged between 27 and 68. The interviews were collected between June and August 2022 and were submitted to the Content Analysis technique. The testimonies were analyzed based on the relevant literature. From the speeches, it was possible to observe that death doulas are collaborators who use compassionate communication strategies in all phases of death with people who experience the end of life and their families. These Doulas act in the whole health care network and are also facilitators educating people for death. They also present some difficulties, such as the taboo of death and the lack of professional regulation, which intensify its occupational stigma. It is crucial to widen the perspective towards death Doulas, so that the visibility and importance of this profession may change the paradigm of death as a forbidden theme and make room for a look at dying well

Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, realizada com 20 Doulas da morte formadas e atuantes no Brasil, com idade entre 27 a 68 anos. As entrevistas foram coletadas entre junho e agosto de 2022 e foram submetidas à técnica de Análise de Conteúdo e os depoimentos analisados à luz da literatura pertinente. A partir dos discursos foi possível observar que as Doulas da morte são colaboradores que utilizam estratégias de comunicação compassiva em todas as fases da morte de pessoas que vivenciam a finitude humana e seus familiares; atendem em toda rede de atenção à saúde e também atuam como facilitadoras na educação para a morte. Apresentam como dificuldades o tabu da morte, a falta de regulamentação profissional, que juntos, aumentam o estigma da profissão.
