The appreciation of aesthetics has led, increasingly, the patient to seek for clear teeth. Bleaching products based on hydrogen peroxide are commonly used, but its mechanism of action on dental structures is still poorly known. The purpose of this literature review was to clarify the mechanism of action of peroxides during bleaching. It was observed that the mechanism of bleaching agents on bleaching is still relatively shady and controversial. The therapeutic recommendation introduced randomly justifies this narrow understanding about the acting on the dental structures. Moreover, the finds that the dental bleaching is the result of breakdown of organic pigments molecules seems to be contradictory so far; being more probable that, in fact, no bleaching occurs, but whitening, as a result of oxidation of proteins. It is concluded that the data about the mechanism of action of hydrogen peroxide are still unknown, and that multidisciplinary research must be conducted in order to evaluate the hypotheses already presented
