Resumo: | The development of the machining of hardened steels is a current phenomenon derived from a marketing guideline of cost reduction and production time tied to the challenge of the sustainability of the manufacturing processes in general. This results in the need to develop machines with high rigidity and accuracy, tools with high hardness and wear resistance at high temperatures, efficient lubrication and cooling methods with low socio-environmental impact, as well as optimization of cutting parameters, which have significant influence on the desired quality parameters. This paper proposes to study different cutting parameters for optimum combination in order to obtain satisfactory results in the asymmetric front milling of AISI 4340 hardened steel through the use of minimum quantity lubrication and coated carbide tools. For this purpose, tests were performed in which sets of cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and cutting width) varied for two conditions of coated carbide tools (PVDTiAlN and CVD-TiCN-Al2O3). The analysis of the results was based on the evaluation of the milling cycles in relation to: roughness, machining power, acoustic emission, vibration, qualitative tool wear and chip shape and type. It was concluded that all parameters significantly influence the surface quality of the machined part, so that the best condition for asymmetric front milling with minimum quantity lubrication of the AISI 4340 hardened steel comprises: cutting speed of 200 [m / min], feed rate of 0.1 [mm], cutting width corresponding to ¼ of milling cutter diameter and PVD-TiAlN coated carbide tool. In addition, it has been found that the mean roughness values obtained in all the tests, and especially those resulting from the conditions described above, are comparable to those required in the grinding process ...
