Resumo: | A handwriting of good quality frequently occurs in a typical human development (SILVA; BORGES, 2008). Psychomotor components integrate the production and skill development of a handwriting of good quality. Such components are the visualmotor integration, the visual perception, and the fine motor coordination. The present study examined the influence of such psychomotor components (ie, visual perception, visual-motor integration, and fine motor coordination) on handwriting. A total of 160 children participated of this study, both genders, aged between 7 and 10 years. The data collection was done in two stages. In the first stage the Minnesota Handwriting Assessment - MHA (REISMAN, 1999) was used to assess the quality of handwriting. Two groups were formed from the MHA results, group of good writers (GGW, 47 children) and the groups of poor writers (GPW, 38 children). In the second stage of this study, the participants underwent a battery of tests The Developmental Test Beery-Buktenica of Visual-Motor Integration - Beery VMI (BEERY, BUKTENICA & BEERY, 2010). The Beery VMI assesses the components associated to visual perception (VP), visual-motor integration (VMI), and fine motor coordination (FMC). The results of the comparison between the GGW (good) and GPW (poor) indicated significant differences for VMI (U = 506, p <0.001); VP (G = 591, p <0.01); and FMC, t(83) = 4.27, p <0.0001. The good writers (GGW) had superior performances in the three components of the test Beery VMI. Also, the children of the GGW (201 s) took on average more time to perform a task that assessed the handwriting (MHA) than the children of the GPW (171 s) (U = 594, p <0.01). Therefore, the results indicated that there is a significant influence of the visual perception skills, visual-motor integration, and fine motor coordination on the handwriting |
