Determining the nursing staff size is the first step in the process of providing staff, and its main objective is the estimation of the number of professionals needed by category in order to meet, either directly or indirectly, the needs of nursing care. It is a systematic process which depends on the existing workload in the unit, and on the adoption of a Patients´ Classification System, which should be able to outline the patients‟ profile cared for through critical indicators. The latter should encompass essential aspects of patients and determiners to quantify the care. The objectives are as follows: Determining the nursing staff size in the Admission Unit for patients suffering from Acute Mental Disorders in a Psychiatric Referral Hospital according to the model of Gaidzinski; to compare the estimated picture with the existing one, and to adjust the Classification System of Psychiatric Patients to the institutional reality. This is an exploratory-descriptive study which uses quantitative approach for data analysis, and case study for the methodological procedure. Data collection was performed over 120 days. A total of 150 patients were classified with an average value of 31 patients per day. The study revealed that 02 workers have exceeded the number of nursing staff; a lack of 10 Nurses and a surplus of 12 Nursing Assistants were found. Concerning the tool used to classify the patients, three critical indicators were developed and added, the existing ones were reviewed, and adequacy was established for levels of dependence in relation to levels of dependence of the System of Patient´s Classification used by the COFEN, resolution nº293/2004. Therefore, this study becomes the best available evidence for determining psychiatric nursing staff size and classification system of psychiatric patients.
