Resumo: Aiming at animal welfare and reducing the occurrence of altered behaviors, environmental enrichment (EA) practices are used to stimulate the expression of natural behaviors typical of the species. The objective of the present study was to propose and evaluate the effect of EA on a group of parrots kept in the CEMPAS, FMVZ/UNESP - Botucatu. For this, 41 parrots were used; the study was divided into three stages: (1) elaboration of the etogram of altered behaviors, (2) food enrichment (EAL) and (3) cognitive enrichment (EC). In each of the stages the evaluation of the etogram was performed, in order to verify the efficiency of the EE in the reduction of the altered behaviors. The proposed EA was to offer fruits in their natural form (papaya; orange; yellow cavendish; palm-jerivá; chinaberry and leucaena) and to test the cognitive abilities of parrots in order to improve the quality of the management of captive animals, promoting their welfare. Only 12% of the animals presented motor stereotypies (EM). Among the cases of EM there was the postural type (hanging with legs open at different angles and hanging with feet and head in contact with the upper screen of the enclosure) and movement (shake your head sinuously, from right to left). There was no difference in the rate of occurrence of stereotyped behaviors before (PRÉ-EA: 8.02±15.48) and after (PÓS-EAL: 7.34±15.47 and PÓS-EC: 8,060±16,86) the interventions performed (Freedman test, p=0.142). The presence of stereotyped behaviors did not affect the motor and cognitive ability of the animals, to identify, obtain, manipulate and consume the whole fruits or in their almost natural form

The presence of stereotyped behaviors did not affect the motor and cognitive ability of the animals, to identify, obtain, manipulate and consume the whole fruits or in their almost natural formVisando o bem-estar animal e diminuição da ocorrência de comportamentos alterados, as práticas de enriquecimento ambiental (EA) são empregadas com a finalidade de estimular a expressão de comportamentos naturais típicos da espécie.
