Resumo: The aim of this study was to understand the motivations of informal caregivers of elderly people with functional dependence in Brazil and Portugal to assume this care. This is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach based on the Theory of Social Representations. Participants were 21 Brazilian family caregivers and 11 informal Portuguese caregivers of dependent elderly people. The collection was carried out through the interview and from the analysis of Bardin's Content three categories emerged: “Family relationship”, “Social Representations about the home” and “Social Representations about old age”. It was noticed that family relationships are an important reason for deciding care by family members, but that caregivers were also concerned with meeting the expectations of the place and the condition of the elderly in society.

Editora Mackenzie2021-10-22info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfapplication/pdfhttp://editorarevistas.mackenzie.br/index.php/ptp/article/view/1342810.5935/1980-6906/ePTPSP13428The Journal Of Psychology: Theory and Practice ; Vol. 23 No. 3 (2021); ePTPSP13428Revista Psicología: Teoría y Práctica; Vol. 23 Núm. 3 (2021); ePTPSP13428Revista Psicologia: Teoria e Prática; v. 23 n. 3 (2021); ePTPSP134281980-69061516-3687reponame:Psicologia (Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie.
