Support Group for Caregivers of Children Adimitted to a Pediatric Unit

Resumo: This article reports the work of a psychological intervention group. This group is focused in dealing with families during child hospitalization time in order to provide a reflection on their behavior. Also, a better understanding how to cope with anguish and fear during child illness. The therapeutic factors related to support groups were identified. This qualitative study was exploratory nature. All the therapeutic factors were identified and analyzed from the subjects’ report. These groups were composed by caregivers of admitted children and psychology interns. The meetings occurred during seven months, lasting about 70 minutes. In total, 78 people were engaged within the groups developed and coordinated by psychology interns. It was verified that the groups provided a better coping, empowering the caregiver to support and be effective as children companion. The groups also showed to be effective in solving problems related to hospitalization. Furthermore, this procedure may represent a possibility for psychologists to work at the hospital, representing an important therapeutic resource aiming at the reduction of suffering from families and the hospitalized children.

Se trata de un estudio cualitativo y exploratório y los factores terapéuticos fueron identificados y analizados a partir de relatos de los participantes. Los grupos fueron constituidos por los cuidadores de los niños ingresados. Las reuniones ocurrieron durante siete meses, con una duración de aproximadamente 70 minutos. En total, 78 personas pasaron por los grupos desarrollado y coordinado por internos de psicología. Se verificó que los grupos proporcionaron um afrontamiento a dificultades, el fortalecimiento de la identidad del acompañante como un proveedor de cuidados, fueron eficaces en la solución de problemas relacionados con la hospitalización, por lo tanto, constituyendo una posibilidad de actuación del psicólogo en el ámbito hospitalario y representa un recurso terapéutico importante para reducir el sufrimiento de las familias de los niños hospitalizados.Este artigo relata um trabalh o de intervenção psicológica em grupo, cujo objetivo é proporcionar uma reflexão acerca da reação das famílias diante do adoecimento, entender como lidam com a angústia e o medo, e identificar fatores terapêuticos em grupos de apoio. O estudo teve caráter qualitativo e natureza exploratória, e os fatores terapêuticos foram identificados e analisados com base no relato dos sujeitos. Os grupos eram constituídos pelos acompanhantes das crianças internadas. As reuniões ocorreram durante sete meses, durando aproximadamente 70 minutos. No total, 78 pessoas participaram dos grupos elaborados e coordenados pelas estagiárias de psicologia. Verificou- se que os grupos proporcionaram um enfrentamento das dificuldades, fortaleceram a identidade do acompanhante como cuidador, mostraram-se efetivos em solucionar problemas relacionados à hospitalização, constituindo assim uma possibilidade de atuação do psicólogo no contexto hospitalar e representando um recurso terapêutico importante na diminuição do sofrimento das famílias e das crianças hospitalizadas.
