Sickness and Suffering of University Professors: Affective and Ethical-Political Dimensions

Resumo: In this paper we aim to identify and analyze prevalent diagnosis of teachers’ health problems, especially those concerning the mental health. The data are acquired of federal university research in expansion-internalization process, which analyzed the impact of the multiple demands of this process at work, related to health and subjectivity. The methodological instrument was composed of: semi-structured interviews with teachers of different areas, campuses and academic units; analysis of documents and data on the expansion; systematization of data on nonattendance due to health problems collected in consultation with the books of medical committee of the institution. We place in order the presentation of such records. On the other hand, we pointed out, to develop the scope limit of the article, qualitative aspects of the disease process and/or suffering with intersections between identified diagnoses and analysis of interviews. We conclude that sickness and suffering involve affective, ethical and political dimensions.

Los datos son resultantes de pesquisa en universidad federal en proceso de expansión- interiorización, cuyo objetivo ha sido analizar el impacto de las múltiples demandas de este proceso en el trabajo, salud y subjetividad. Las herramientas metodológicas han sido compuestas por: entrevistas semi-estructuradas con profesores de diferentes áreas, campus y unidades académicas; análisis de documentos y datos sobre la expansión; sistematización de datos sobre ausentismo por problemas de salud, recogidos en la consulta a los livros de la junta médica de la instituición. Priorizamos la presentación de estos registros. Por otra parte, en los límites del artículo, señalamos algunos aspectos cualitativos de la enfermedad y/o el sufrimiento, con uniones entre diagnósticos identificados y análisis de las entrevistas. Concluímos que enfermedad y sufrimiento implican dimensiones afectivas, éticas y políticas.Neste artigo, objetivamos identificar e analisar diagnósticos prevalentes de problemas de saúde de professores, com destaque aos relativos à saúde mental. Os dados são de pesquisa em universidade federal em processo de expansão-interiorização, cujo objetivo foi analisar as repercussões das múltiplas demandas desse processo no trabalho, na saúde e na subjetividade. O instrumental metodológico foi composto por: entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores de áreas, campi e unidades acadêmicas distintos; análise de documentos e dados sobre a expansão; sistematização de dados sobre afastamentos por problemas de saúde coletados em consulta aos livros da junta médica da instituição. Priorizamos a apresentação destes registros. De outra parte, apontamos, nos limites do escopo do artigo, para aspectos qualitativos do adoecimento e/ou sofrimento, com articulações entre diagnósticos identificados e análises das entrevistas.
