On the Social Memory of the “Golden Years”: Beetle, World Cup, Bossa Nova and Miss Brazil

Resumo: This article discusses a research about social memory of the 50’s, known as the “Golden Years”, which focused specifically on: the launching of the Beetle, Volkswagen’s first model made in the country, the first World Cup won by Brazil, the advent of Bossa Nova, and the Competitions of Miss Brazil. The theoretical background consists of a psychosocial perspective on memory involving the joint of psychological, sociological and historical contributions. Data collection was performed by administering a questionnaire to 450 residents of Rio de Janeiro, distributed among three age groups: elderly, adults and youth. In data analysis the frequencies of responses produced by the three groups of participants for each question were compared. Results demonstrate important differences between the memories of the distinct generational groups, which are satisfactorily explained by theoretical principles about the social construction of memory.

La fundamentación teórica consiste en una perspectiva psicosocial de la memoria que considera la articulación de contribuciones psicológicas, sociológicas e históricas. La recolección de los datos fue realizada a través de la aplicación de un cuestionario a 450 habitantes de Rio de Janeiro, distribuidos en tres grupos etarios: adultos mayores, adultos y jóvenes. En el análisis de los datos fueron comparadas las frecuencias de las respuestas producidas por los tres grupos de participantes para cada una de las cuestiones. Los resultados evidencian importantes diferencias entre las memorias de los distintos grupos generacionales, los cuales son satisfactoriamente explicados por los principios teóricos sobre la construcción social de la memoria.O presente artigo trata de uma pesquisa sobre a memória social dos anos 50, conhecidos como “os anos dourados”, na qual se focalizam especificamente: a fabricação do Fusca, primeiro modelo da fábrica Volkswagen no país; a conquista da primeira Copa do Mundo pelo Brasil; o advento da Bossa Nova; e os Concursos de Miss Brasil. A fundamentação teórica consiste numa perspectiva psicossocial da memória envolvendo a articulação de contribuições psicológicas, sociológicas e históricas. A coleta dos dados foi feita através da aplicação de um questionário a 450 moradores do Rio de Janeiro, distribuídos entre três estratos etários: idosos, adultos e jovens. Na análise dos dados compararam-se as freqüências das respostas produzidas pelos três grupos de participantes para cada uma das questões. Os resultados evidenciam importantes diferenças entre as memórias dos distintos conjuntos geracionais, que são satisfatoriamente explicadas pelos princípios teóricos acerca da construção social da memória.
