Marital Relationship and Expectations about Parenthood in Gay Couples

Resumo: The aim of this study was to understand the processes of construction of the marital relationship and expectations about parenthood in same-sex couples. It has been interviewed four gay couples (four men and four women) who have been living together for four years, on average. Semi-structured interviews have been used and the technique of the life history has been also performed in an individual appliance. They have also been audio taped, fully and literally transcribed. The content analysis revealed three categories: marital relationship, family formation and expectations regarding the adoption by homosexual couples. The couples who have been interviewed founded and qualified their relationships based on feelings of: love, companionship, partnership, loyalty and fidelity. The couples have also claimed the desire to have children, recognizing the responsibility of such a choice. It is observed that these couples have given responsibility to the family as an institution that must take care, protect and encourage their participants, resulting the homosexual engage very much alike to the kind of arrangement of the traditional and heterosexual model. Despite the feature prejudice regarding homosexualities, they have shown interest in the current discussion on the rights of LGBT people.

Fueron entrevistados cuatro parejas homosexuales (cuatro hombres y cuatro mujeres) que vivían juntos durante cuatro años, en promedio. Fueron utilizadas entrevistas semiestructuradas y la técnica de la historia de la vida, todas aplicadas individualmente, grabadas en audio, transcritas textualmente. El análisis de contenido reveló três categorías: la relación marital, formación de la familia y las expectativas a respecto de la adopción homoparental. Las parejas entrevistadas fundamentan y califican las relaciones por medio de los sentimientos de amor, compañerismo, colaboración, lealtad y fidelidad. Presentan el deseo de tener hijos, reconociendo la responsabilidad de esta elección. Se observa que es atribuida a la familia la responsabilidad de una institución que deba cuidar, proteger y incentivar sus participantes, siendo homoafectivo según la comparación con el modelo tradicional heteronormativo. Pese los prejuicios existentes en contra a las homosexualidades, se muestran interesados acerca de los debates por los derechos de la población LGBT.O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender os processos de construção da conjugalidade e as expectativas em relação à parentalidade em casais homossexuais. Foram entrevistados quatro casais (quatro homens e quatro mulheres) que coabitavam havia quatro anos, em média. Utilizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas e a técnica da história de vida, audiogravadas e transcritas. A análise de conteúdo revelou três categorias: relação conjugal, constituição da família e expectativas quanto à adoção homoparental. Os casais entrevistados fundamentam e qualificam seus relacionamentos baseados nos sentimentos de amor, companheirismo, parceria, lealdade e fidelidade. Apresentam o desejo de ter filhos, reconhecendo a responsabilidade de tal escolha. Observa-se que atribuem à família a responsabilidade de uma instituição que deve cuidar de seus participantes, protegê-los e incentivá-los, sendo o arranjo homoafetivo comparado ao modelo tradicional e heteronormativo.
