The Creative Economy, the most recent widely circulated model for urban regeneration, has developed with a perspective towards local planning within the context of economic globalization. The model utilizes urban space to advance the reproduction of capital with a strategy that includes diversity, innovation and the promotion of arts and culture. The resulting Creative Clusters materialize with an economic network that transforms tangible aspects – space and products – and the intangible – experience and identity of place – into marketable merchandise. Following typical urban economic cycles, the processes of regeneration eventually result in the destruction of the intrinsic creative spontaneity and the local culture. Parallel observations of North American and Brazilian Creative Clusters bring to light representative examples of two typical models of formation – the planned model and the socalled “spontaneous” model. A comparison of these models highlights the differences between the processes and the application of the principles of the Creative Economy in the city. We conclude that the economic cycles that transform the Creative Clusters adapt themselves to local realities, while replicating the processes of capital reproduction across the urban territory. The Creative Clusters formed within the repeating but varying spatioeconomic cycles display a wide variety of attributes. And because they are in constant movement – as are cities, people and creativity – they maintain a continuous process of change that recurrently transforms the identity of the place.
