Resumo: The objective of this research is to study the image of the malandro , who is a typical social character of the samba musical environment. This is being studied through the record covers that carry this image. Based on a historical contextualization and the recuperation of records that carry the image of the malandro , the visual and semiotic connections between each record cover can be better discussed. By the first half of the 20th century, the malandro samba musician is the only one to continue to promote the importance of freedom in popular creation and to promote the cultural identity of the working african-descendent groups in Brazil. The variety of the manifestation forms of the malandro s image, together with the social/cultural context in which his image was conceived, make the record covers not only an important document about Brazilian graphic industry, but they are also documents that conserve the image of a typical social character in Brazilian culture.

Na primeira metade do século XX, o sambista malandro é o único que continua a promover a importância da liberdade de criação popular e da identidade cultural dos grupos negro-proletários.
