The present piece aims to discuss the new relations between waterfronts and the contemporary city. Particularly, about intervention projects in areas along riversides, or river banks, that were embraced by the urban environment. This study demonstrates the importance of water resources, and their interactions with the landscape, society and urban environment, becoming part of the current debate about sustainable urban development. Therefore, the focus here is on Tietê river, on its urban stretch inside the city of São Paulo, and the urban intervention master plan, proposed during Fernando Haddad's tenure as mayor (2013-2016), for the area alongside the river, named "Arco Tietê". The intention of this paper is to investigate the bounds, the possibilities and challenges related to the reintegration of Tietê river into the landscape and urban tissue of São Paulo. It understands that all the plans and projects in the region must prioritize the area`s environmental recovery and should attempt to assimilate the river into the urban environment, not simply eliminating risks and local vulnerabilities, but also contributing systemically to the social and environmental improvement of the metropolitan area. To develop this work, a conceptual matrix is establishes that intends to direct the conception and observation of urban projects in waterfront areas. To compose this matrix, some parameters are extracted from theoretical concepts, as well as from three reference projects of urban intervention adjacent to rivers, namely: "Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan" LARRMP, in Los Angeles USA; MRIO, Manzanares river, in Madrid - Spain; "Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project", in Seoul Korea Republic. The role of Tietê river inside the metropolis constitution is described and contextualized, discussing local problems and possibilities. The Strategic Master Plan of São Paulo`s city (Plano Diretor Estratégico - PDE)‟s proposal for the river is verified demonstrating how Arco Tietê" is being implemented. It also shows some of the proposals in the pre-feasibility scope study which are emphasized from an environmental perspective. The piece concludes that in spite of it being the area‟s primordial element, the river is not a priority in the development of "Arco Tietê".
