Resumo: Este artigo visa ao estudo da obra Canaã, do autor José Pereira da Graça Aranha, especificamente o modo como o texto literário representa o imigrante e o processo imigratório no Espírito Santo. Pretende-se analisar, na construção da narrativa, como os dados históricos, de natureza social tornam-se núcleo da elaboração estética do romance. Pretende-se ainda compreender de que maneira a representação desses referentes históricos coadunam com o projeto artístico do escritor maranhense de divulgação de uma arte moderna e brasileira, amplamente enfatizada na Semana de Arte Moderna.THE IMIGRATION REPRESENTATION IN CANAÃ, BY GRAÇA ARANHAThis essay aims to study the book Canaã, by José Pereira da Graça Aranha, specifically the manner that the literary text represents the immigrant and immigration procedure in Espírito Santo. We intend to analyze, in the narrative construction, the way that the historical and social facts become the novel´s aesthetic elaboration nucleus. We also intend to comprehend how the frame of reference represented coadunate with the writer´s artistic project about a modern and Brazilian art, extensively emphasized in Semana de Arte Moderna.
