Resumo: The present work evaluated the influence of different types of forage palm on the diet of the ovine on the renal parenchyma and the serum levels of creatinine and urea, 24 sheep were used, neutered, with initial mean live weight of 21 ± 0.5 kg, age approximately 8 months. The experimental period lasted for 86 days, with 14 days for adaptation of the animals to the management and 72 days for diet evaluation. The treatments were composed of four different types of forage Palm miúda (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm-Dyck), Orelha-de-Elefante-Mexicana (Opuntia stricta) (OEM), IPA-Sêrtania (Nopalea sp) e F-21 (Nopalea sp). At the beginning of the experiment and every 14 days blood samples were collected biochemical analysis of creatinine and urea. At the end of the experimental period the animals were slaughtered and the kidneys were removed and fragments of these organs were processed for inclusion in paraffin and stained by the Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) technique and special staining of PAS (Periodic acid-Schif) and Morphometric analysis of renal parenchyma. The tissue fragments were analyzed morphologically and histopathologically under a microscope. The biochemical parameters of the animals fed with different types of palm will remain within the norms of normality. In the quantitative histopathological analysis of the renal parenchyma, animals fed the different types of forage palm presented renal alterations with varying degree and intensity. The most frequent lesions in all treatments were glomerular atrophy, medullary interstitial dystrophic calcification, tubular nephrosis with intratubular cell debris and cortical congestion. In the histomorphometric analysis of Bowman's capsule area, renal glomerulus and Bowman's space in this study, no difference was found between the experimental groups. According to the results obtained in the present experiment, different types of forage palms caused renal histopathological lesions, forage palm F-21 and IPA can be used in feeding sheep for periods up to 72 days, important to note that renal parenchymal damage was produced to a lesser extent. On the other hand the Small and Mexican Elephant ear palms used in this experiment produce severe damage to the nephron components that justified renal failure.

Submitted by Mario BC (mario@bc.ufrpe.br) on 2018-05-07T14:16:54Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Usman Abdulhadi Usman.pdf: 4674306 bytes, checksum: 50451dce17354b8bf09c9dad2ad364a2 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2018-05-07T14:16:54Z (GMT).
